So Dan and many of his friends really like Nick Cave--and by "really" I mean they're obsessed. There are songs of his that are incredibly intoxicating to me, but in general I'm not a huge fan. Dan made a mix CD for the trip up to Grand Rapids yesterday and I'm suddenly obsessed with this one:

Lovely Creature
Nick Cave

There she stands, this lovely creature
There she stands, there she stands
With her hair full of ribbons
And green gloves on her hands
So I asked this lovely creature
Yes, I asked. Yes I asked
Would she walk with me a while
Through this night so fast
She took my hand, this lovely creature
"Yes", she said, "Yes", she said
"Yes, I'll walk with you a while"
It was a joyful man she led
Over hills, this lovely creature
Over mountains, over ranges
By great pyramids and sphinxes
We met drifters and strangers
On the sands, my lovely creature
And the mad, moaning winds
At night the deserts writhed
With diabolical things
Through the night, through the night
The wind lashed and it whipped me
When I got home, my lovely creature
She was no longer with me
Somewhere she lies, this lovely creature
Beneath the slow drifting sands
With her hair full of ribbons
And green gloves on her hands

<3 Dan's dad and one of his sisters just visited, and we got a stack of old CDs from it. One was Julee Cruise's "The Voice of Love." David Lynch wrote most of the lyrics on the CD, and Angelo Badalementi composed most of it. It's very odd and ethereal and surreal...like anything they do. Another was the Twin Peaks soundtrack. <3 <3 <3 I'm a very odd girl, I know.

In this world of many people
You and I live and love on many lands
We dance, we fly, we laugh, we cry
The river of our life flows

Through the changing waters
A shining truth we see
We will always strive to be
Friends, friends for life

In this world of many colors
The storms of life, the joys of life, move by
The dark, the light, the day, the night
The river of our life flows

Through the changing waters
A shining truth we see
We will always strive to be
Friends, friends for life

We are friends
Friends for life

Also, today I (finally) found a couple of new work tops and a new pair of work pants. This season has shit for clothes, just for the record. However, I lucked out and got an amazing pair of stiletto leather knee-high boots for a third of their original price. Win. I can't wear them to work, though, as they are so so slippery.

Dan wants liquor, and I kinda do, too, so we're going to Tiffany's. I'll write more later, perhaps.

*sighs*

There is typically one song that just catches me the second I hear it and WILL. NOT. LET. GO. when it comes to David Lynch films. I finally got my hands on "Polish Poem" from Inland Empire (I'm ordering the CD, too, shush, don't worry).

I don't think these lyrics are perfect, but pretty close...

Chrysta Bell – Polish Poem
from the INLAND EMPIRE Original Soundtrack

I sing this poem to you...
On the other side, I see…
Shall you wait, glowing?
It’s far away, far away from me,
I can see that -
I can see that -
the wind blows outside and I have no breath,
I breathe again and know I’ll have to live
To forget my world is ending.
I have to live…
I hear my heart beat,
Fluttering in pain, saying something,
Tears are coming to my eyes -
I cry…I cry…
I cannot feel the warmth of the sun
I cannot hear the laughter
Choking with every thought,
I see the faces,
My hands are tied as I wish -
But no one comes,
No one comes,
Where are you?
Where are you?
What will make me want to live?
What will make me want to love?
Tell me…tell me…

I sing this poem to you…to you…
Is this mystery unfolding
As a wind floating?
Something is coming true -
The dream of an innocent child…

Something is happening -
Something is happening…

So one of the artists I really enjoy, but never get around to buying the album, is Kiran Ahluwalia. I heard her a couple of years ago on NPR. She sings gazhals (an old form of Indian love songs), and has an absolutely stunning voice. I just happened to be listening on her site and reading lyrics, and I wanted to post this one...

Saaqiya (Wine Bearer)

Ghazal
Music: Traditional
Lyrics: Mustafa Zaidi

Lyrics:
Saaqiya jaam utha saaqiya mai pila
Raat dhalti rahai daur chalta rahai
Rindh madhosh ho ho kay girtai rahain
Pinay walon ka armaan nikalta rahai

Dekh kar unki zulfoon ko rookhsaar par
Jee uthi phir tamana tarko jigar
Yun hi chehre pay zulfain machalti rahain
Chand chup chup kay yun hi nikalta rahai

Talkhiyeh zindagi is kadar badh gayee
Talkhiyeh mayn ka mainay sahara liya
Warna thi itni phursat jahan may kisay
Yoon bahakta rahai or sambhalta rahai

Translation:
Wine bearer, lift the goblet, pour the wine.
Let the night flow, let the wine glow.
Let the drinkers get inebriated, let them lose their footing.
Let the drinkers satisfy their desires.

Looking at her locks gracing her cheeks,
my feelings for her have again been stoked.
Let her locks remain falling off her face.
Let the moon keep playing hide and seek.

Bitterness of life has so increased
that I have come to rely on the
bitterness of wine for recompense.
Otherwise, who had such leisure in life
to stumble and to regain footing again and again.

So, I often say that I work at a Jimmy Buffett inspired restaurant, but I really don't care for his music. This is very true, but every now and again I hear a song that either is really good at getting stuck in my head or that I get a kick out of, or just that I sincerely like. This one is currently stuck in my head, and I actually really enjoy it. It's a fun one, and I really love the chorus...

Smart Woman (in a real short skirt)
Jimmy Buffett

I'm looking for a smart woman in a real short skirt/A smart woman who knows how to flirt/A smart woman, got a mind of her own/A smart woman who'll take me home... )

Also, a fun little video from the Hendrick's Gin kissing booth *grins*

This one's for all my prescription-medicated friends. Dan was on a website list of "top music videos of 2006" and I overheard this playing and had to watch. I love the lyrics, I love the sound and the video is wonderfully disconnected and creepy.

Emily Haines, "Doctor Blind"
http://studio.adbeast.com/files/00000016/1386820_dr_blind_Large.mov
Lyrics: http://www.alwaysontherun.net/emilyhaines.htm#k2

This was the description/review of it on the site...

Improbably, two directors set videos in shuttered department stores this year. First was Michel Gondry's wide-eyed Macy's-comes-alive holiday piece for Kanye West's "Heard 'Em Say", which, in addition to sharing an uncomfortable amount of unacknowledged similarities with special FX godfather Mike Jittlov's 1974 short Swing Shift, ultimately suffered the indignity of being shelved by West in favor of a hastily-commissioned ink-and-paper reading from Bill Plympton. Second up was this, Jaron Albertin's frigid clip for Emily Haines, which uses the chilly grey atmospheres of a discount department store as a metaphor for the after hours disconnect that comes as a consequence of every little blue pill. Coldly rendered, and imbued with some beautifully narcotized movements, "Doctor Blind" looks and feels absolutely pristine. That it also happens to boast one of the year's best pure concepts is testament to Albertin's talent.

P.S. I hate the new update screen.

P.P.S. I never understood why people wrote "PSS" for a second Postscript and PSSS for a third. I always figured it would be PPS for "post-postscript." Enlighten me, please, or assure me that it's perfectly fine that it's one of my biggest pet peeves.

hehe...

So there was this group called Fractal that played at Francois' this past weekend. They sounded really fantastic live, so I bought the CD. The CD isn't nearly as good as they were live, but you all must listen to the song Fly Paper on the MySpace page. Seriously: http://myspace.com/micaela Many people who end up around here for a while joke about this exact subject. The lyrics in this song aren't the best, but it's great nonetheless...

Kalamazoo, can't seem to get away from you
Whenever I leave I always come back to you...

...But something about this place kinda sucks you in
Strips you down and gets under your skin
And before you know it you belong
You don't really know how long you haven't gone
Something in you wants to stay,
But another part just wants to get away

There are so many great things about this town that just makes me realize every so often how much I really love it here, and other times I'm just ready to go and want to move on to the next place.

Oh shush. I adore Heather Nova. This is off her newest (released in May, that I of course haven't gotten yet :-P). I've been enamoured with it for the past week or two.

Out of the corner of my eye/Saw you walk in, I freezed the frame/My luck again... )

[livejournal.com profile] hearthstone made a comment in her journal about Garbage's latest album (Bleed Like Me) and the Parental Advisory label on it. I've used Garbage before for various projects (she's got some great messages in a lot of her songs) so I had a clue as to why it might have one, but it prompted me to go look at the lyrics, and there are some really great ones. I thought a few of you (any of us that have dealt with any sort of serious mental disorders, particularly) might really find something interesting in it...especially the title song. I think I may post these in [livejournal.com profile] dnward_spiral, too:

Bleed Like Me lyrics... )

This is why POE needs to release a new album. And why I'm sad I missed her last tour (for three good reasons, though...she was in Detroit the weekend of Women's Showcase, Delta Gamma initiation, and I didn't have a car lol) :-(

"You are like a dream and I am just a trip that you are on. And when the trip is over you will go back to the places that you once belonged. And you will look for comfort there and when you do you'll find that it has gone. And that is when you'll dream a dream that I am you and you are me and then...you'll... know...my...love." --A DREAM (unreleased)

I've been going through the photo albums at realpoe.com gathering photos for icons the next time I'm in the mood to.

1) Select your favorite song.
2) Go to http://babelfish.altavista.com/
3) Translate the song's lyrics from ENGLISH to GERMAN.
4) Translate the song's lyrics from GERMAN to FRENCH.
5) Translate the song's lyrics from FRENCH to ENGLISH.
6) Post this translation to your LiveJournal.
7) Have your friends guess the song.

There are approximately 4-5 of you who better be able to get this. I'm on a Stevie kick right now, but I knew none of you would get any of my favourite Stevie songs if I used one, so I didn't.

This place believes I thus do not know intimates and nevertheless, me probably thinks you, to him that I maintained to belong here, but the only manner which is me to explain can that you still miss me and I cannot find you you here, on the left me and violently right soft Spanish headstock that this gezerrissen tattered went me to the bottom with the lane and found that you were not yet a gone Spanish headstock: silicone nunca unit of width will fueras, you word not of advertisement know me gauchement precisely that headstock Spanish went false: lagrima where me me go however now, it does not matter, where you always seem to turn over the Spanish headstock: buscame, too, where you me tattered and violently Spanish headstock gezerrissene left: estoy rompida to thousand muneca Precisely that this soft Spanish headstock a memory guilded in reds and in gold headstock Spanish: from Oro beauty protected and sold the headstock never Spanish: cuidame, I hold it with me, where myself and I love you the still Spanish headstock goes: recuerdame, it does not matter as a history extends, always know you me Spanish of will headstock: esta conmigo, in the Spanish headstock of these memories a foreigner in this world without you are here have the part of you who I can indeed all be that I know who am purely and freely you on the left him with me here on this memory Spanish... This is actually pretty easy, it seems. Even after I cut out all the ( ) stuff.

*bounces* In related news, I finally found "Padre Fear" AND "Strange Wind" on LimeWire!
