Note to self: when you don't like a restaurant the first time around, don't go back...it never gets better.

Tonight I decided I wanted sushi and went to Ukai, which is right next door to my hotel in Lansing. I keep hearing it's fantastic...obviously these people have never had good sushi. I went there for take-out my last time in town and wasn't impressed, to say the least. I tried it again tonight, and it was no better. They have sushi platters, which is nice, but the fish just doesn't taste as fresh as I'm used to. Also, they have the sweetest green tea ice cream I've ever had...eh. And all they have for gin is Tanq and Sapphire :-(

Ooh...that reminds me! I went to The Chophouse in K'zoo last week with [livejournal.com profile] peazgirl1545 and they introduced me to Quintessential, which is also rather wonderful (very very very smooth, with lotus and lavender. I think it would make a fantastic martini, though I'm not a martini drinker).

Anyway, long story short, any restaurant I ever go to that I don't like the first time never gets any better the second, so I shouldn't even waste my time or money. Ukai doesn't even sate my sushi cravings--it just makes me want to find something to get the taste out of my mouth :-(

Madeline and Britni got me an ice cream cake that I didn't think to get a picture of until after I had cut it up and offered everybody a piece:

Card! They rock :-)

I'll miss them :-( I feel loved! :-D

Safe and sound in Cincinnati. Amazingly, the six hour drive seems shorter than my three hour trip across the state from Sterling to K'zoo does. Unfortunately, it seems as though the hotel I'm staying at has been infested with a gathering of 8-12 year old girls :-P In reality, I believe it's a sports thing. I think I saw soccer shirts.

Off to find food and then to the restaurant get my keys and such for work tomorrow.

Now I just need to find people to explore downtown with. I don't like doing downtowns I don't know by myself. A) I get hit on too much at bars, and B) I inherited that whole paranoid "I'm going to get killed if I'm anywhere by myself" gene from my mother.

I'm tired and I start training at Francois' tonight, so this is just going to be a quicky...I'll post a real update later. Suffice it to say, if you haven't listened to my last voice post, you really should--it sums the end of the trip up pretty nicely :-P

So...it's set! [livejournal.com profile] peazgrl1545 and I are going to see MZD tomorrow in Chicago. So. Excited.

I think this means I need to charge my camera before I forget completely about it.

I just found out that the Leewood opening (a second Kansas City store...the other one is the "Speedway" store because it's near the racetrack) is in May. I reaaaaaaally need to tell Nick that I reaaaaaaaaaaally want to be on that opening. A lot of the trainers from OKC are going to be there, my roommate from the OKC opening, Cristina, is likely transferring there because it's closer to where she lives, and her bar manager, Brian, is going to be a manager there. *bounces* I would love to see them again!

Wheee!

I'm in Lansing, and in the hotel. I have my own room at the moment, though I don't know if that's temporary or for good since I wasn't scheduled to check-in until tomorrow, apparently (yay coordinator not paying attention to the email I sent her, even though I know she read it because she responded to it).

The bartender trainer from K'zoo is sticking around for bar follow-up, so at least I'll know somebody here for the next few days. Alicia, from the OKC opening (it was her first opening, as well), is here at the moment, but she leaves in the morning. Also, I know half of the management staff, so that's a big plus.

Now I shall be leaving, as I should be getting a call soon because people are going out, and I'd like to see Alicia for a bit before she leaves tomorrow. Plus I need to bring the rest of my stuff in.

I need to get off my butt and to the laundromat. I have about five thousand loads of laundry to do and pack before I have to leave this evening. At least this time I'm only driving an hour...and not flying four. I think Liz should still be there this evening, so maybe I'll get to spend some time with her before she comes back. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn't have a laundry space on the premises (AmeriSuites did, and it was lovely), but there is a laundromat just a couple miles away. Fortunately, on the flip side, there is a Friday's in the hotel (useful for lunch), and a pool, and a spa. That makes me happy.

I'm in a much better mood than I have been lately, and I think it's because I don't have to work today, and because the next week is going to be relatively easy and nice for me. Everything would be complete if I didn't have a roommate at the hotel, but I can deal if I must...lol Also, I will have the remainder of the week off once I'm back in town, as well as off from Bennigan's. I'll be doing more admin training, but that will be early morning/early afternoon, and then I'll be done for the day.

*shudders* And a recent post that a friend made reminded me of this place. Damn Rhino's. On the one hand, I want to go in there and say "hahaha! Look at how much better a situation I'm in now! I'm actually respected and given opportunities and people think I'm important and good at what I do!" but on the other I never want to step foot in there ever again.

These aren't even close to being in any sort of order, but they're from the 13th, 14th and 15th. Any that look museumish are from the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum on Sunday, any that look bar-ish are from Baker St. on Saturday night, any that look restaurantish are from either Friday night or the benefit on Saturday evening. I still have to get my OKC memorial ones developed.

Now I'm off to see a lecture on cultural linguistics.

*checks her profile and wonders who [livejournal.com profile] zz_ljabuse is*

Any takers on an explanation?

Uploading photos right now. Here's one from the memorial site, and a couple random ones from my phone. We found a stuffed parrot on the chain link fence wall where people place memorial sorts of things and left our mark with an Opening Team pin.

Also, hello random archaeological reference in music. I'm listening to Ani DiFranco's "Fuel" and it's about the slave cemetary that was found in New York. I can't tell you how many videos and articles I watched/read on that place in the past three years.

A couple other pics... )

Yay!

So, I went to the mall and Target tonight and I think I'm just about ready for my trip. At the mall I bought a $300 set of luggage for $143.09 (including tax) and a pretty new shirt for going out that was only $10. I was severely tempted to buy a corset-style top that was $68 and looked lovely on me, but (fortunately or unfortunately, I'm not sure which at the moment) I have more self-control than that. I will be mourning that top for years to come, most likely. I have a shiny new pair of work shoes, a new travel toothbrush and various toiletries/toiletry travel cases (like a travel soap dish). Now I think all I have left to do is to buy a pair of regular shoes that aren't falling apart like my boots that I've had for years upon years are :-( ...and to actually pack, of course.

Question for those more flight/travel savvy than I: tagging luggage with my info. How should I go about doing that? Do stores sell pieces I can do it with? My luggage seems to have a little holder on the back that I can put it in, but I'm paranoid of things falling out.
