I went and saw Memoirs of a Geisha tonight. I know a few of you are likely to slaughter me for saying this, but I really enjoyed it. It's nothing that the book was, and I really don't understand why they felt it necessary to cast Chinese actors as some of the leads (it didn't detract terribly, but enough to pull me away from the story too often...talented beyond words, though), but it caught the major moments (and I think I would have cried if the part about being able to stop a man with one look had been taken out, but it was there) and it was simply stunning to look at (which is what I was in the mood for tonight). I was really amazed at how similar some of the scenes looked to how I imagined them while reading. Usually I'm a book nazi and freak out over differences between movies and books, but I'll let other people play that role this time (and the book has garnered much controversy of its own anyway).

One of the previews before the movie was for a new Sofia Coppola movie: Marie Antoinette. Starring Kirsten Dunst. This ought to be interesting...too bad it doesn't come out until next fall.
