Apr. 28th, 2006 09:32 amI saw POTO last night for the second time this week, and this cast really has me rethinking the entire ACTUAL story of the musical. This Phantom is way obsessed with his music...he's not in love with Christine, he's in love with his music, and everything spins out from that. He is by far the best I've seen, but he has such a different take on the character and story of the musical than any I've seen/heard before...it's rather amusing and ironic to see, actually, given that the boyfriend has recently become really interested in deconstructionism.
I'm not going to write anything terribly in depth until I see it with Lissa on Saturday (because A/I'll be taking a notebook with me so I can make sure I get everything I want to touch on, and B/I can hash some of this out with her after the show), but I want to make a few comments...
1. Like I said, this Phantom is really into his music. This rendition of MotN is by far the most beautiful and erotic I've ever heard, and it has NOTHING to do with Christine...unless you count that he's trying to get her to see the amazingness of his music so that she will sing it.
2. Christine is a means to an end..."He was bound to love you when he heard you sing..." The Phantom heard her sing and realized that she was the instrument necessary to take his music public. A marriage of the Phantom and Christine would be the perfect musical marriage--both of their voices and his writing. Plain and simple she was another instrument for him to play. While watching MotN it was suddenly obvious to me that he wasn't caressing a woman, he was caressing an instrument.
3. I now feel SO BAD for the musical Christine. Marie Danvers is a talented actress compared to a lot of stage Christines and actually gives some life and feeling to the character. I've always adored WYWSHA, but I didn't realize exactly how powerful of a song it was until Wednesday night. In light of this sudden humanity in Christine you're horrified that all she suddenly becomes is a pawn between these two men...each are begging her to do their own bidding. Frankly, had I been her, I would have said "Fuck you, Raoul and fuck you, Phantom, you can both go to hell and leave me to my own life!"...but we know Christine is too much a child to pull something like that off.
Anyway...now I really need to go for the day. That's all for my rambling at the moment.
