This is why I wanted to make sure you looked though it. I knew you were going to tare it up a new one. :-D
The Lost Ring is the work of Jane McGonigal who's done ARGs such as I Love Bees (which pitched Halo 2) and Cruel 2 B Kind (with Ian Bogost) among other works. The Lost Ring is sponsored by McDonalds for a tie-in with the Olympic games.
The reason I wanted to get your reactions is the match up of real history and making a side-step for entertainment in light of an ARG. While we can both agree that stretching of the truth is allowed in this context, the fact that the story line must be built into an existing history (and apparently doesn't) seems to be selective of what resources one must use to participate in the ARG. Are we merely left to find resources only provided by the official game channels, or are we allowed to use all the world's resources (which is a tenant of ARGs) to participate in the game? While there is certainly a dose of very noticeable fiction, is McGonigal doing a disservice by taking too much liberty with the history and not providing a greater cultural awareness with the project?
