I love the internet.

So, in my attempt to become a savvy traveler, I've been looking up various tipping sites over the past month. It had never even crossed my mind to tip housekeeping until someone brought it up when I was in OKC. I completely forgot to leave anything at all the morning we left, so I felt awful and made sure that I was going to amend it this time around. It's really amazing the way tipping etiquette works in ways that I never realized.

Maybe this is why I've been making such crap since I got back from Oklahoma...it's the karma of the situation...lol I know I've been doing well--my tables always tell me what a great time they had, or how great I was, or something similar, and still they're almost all leaving 10% tips. It gets disheartening after a while.

So yes... http://www.tipping.org is a very cool site, though I don't totally agree with all their amounts listed (maybe I'm just a generous person, but there are plenty of people in my past who would say otherwise, so I don't think that's the case...I just know that I'm one who helps them pay their rent, and I'm not going to be mean when they're doing me a service). And, more specifically, tipping in the US.

I tip based solely on the hotness of the waitress. If you were my server, I'd leave like a billion dollars.

Then I think you need to come into my restaurant and sit in my section, because I haven't been getting even close to that. My tips have been averaging a little over ten percent for the past couple of weeks because people are evil. Or broke. Or both.

...and usually the inverse happens. The more I get hit on, the less my tip seems to be :-P

That's just wrong. I mean, if you're going to subject the waitress to being hit on, the least you can do is tip well. Once my friend and I spent the entire meal staring at the waitress's boobs. I mean, she had a rack, and we weren't subtle. We felt bad about it so we left a $5 tip on a $15 check.

That's an interesting site (and you shouldn't feel too bad about not knowing about tipping housekeeping in hotels--the only hotel tipping they ever show in the media is the guy who carries your bags!). I don't personally use a lot of services so apart from the pizza guy, tipping doesn't come up often, so for me this is potentially useful info.

I get confused here because I started to get used to the US tipping customs, and there are a load of people it's usual to tip in the US but not in the UK. I always end up uncertain.

yeah you are supposed to tip the housekeeper, but when I was one we didn't really expect people to remember, so it was no big deal.
