So Dan and I went and saw V for Vendetta tonight (because I didn't realize I had the night off, and we felt like seeing a movie, and Thank You For Smoking isn't in wide release yet). It was okay, but I didn't think anything special. Some of the points were nice, but the means to the end were just silly. I hate the constant pounding of things into an audiences' collective heads. Too much blatant evocation of the Nazi regime, too many blatant references to "This is what will happen if America keeps on its current track." As I told Dan afterward, if you create a story like that, chances are that you're preaching to the choir. Have a little bit more faith in them to get something without a million obvious references. Some of the visuals were nice, some of it was overkill. Natalie Portman was wonderful. She really is a fantastic actress. That's about it of my take on it. Also, I kept wondering who was singing that version of "Cry Me A River"...I like Nina Simone's version better. Of course, I think I'm a bit biased, given that I used it in a show I directed once upon a time ;-)

I think I need to go to bed now. Somebody picked up my shift at Bennigan's tomorrow afternoon, but I have a million admin things I need to do at CiP before End of Month.

I always hate saying 'the book was better' because I do not believe that one should compare stories told in other media. The medium is the message, and just by it's very nature a film adaptation will always be different from a graphic novel.

That said, it was very obvious the Wachowski brothers took their own bent on the story with some significant differences. Evey was a desperate and almost prostitute. There was never really a love line between her and V. The reason England ends up with a higher seat of power was due to a short nuclear war (changed to 'America's war' as to imply the war on terror). That's a short list anyway.

Just making sure that no one things Alan Moore had much to do with the film.

I knew that he didn't. A million people on my flist have discussed it, and so I knew a touch going into the film.

Also, I may just have my personal fill of totalitarian stories. Anthem, 1984 and Farhenheit 451 are enough for me.

is anthem any good? i absolutely detest ayn rand's personal politics, so i've avoided reading her books for a long time.

You're missing out on some truly wonderful stories. I don't care much for her personal philosophy (though I can't help but agree with parts of it...they just make SENSE), but I love her writing. Fountainhead is wonderful, and Kyrie reminded me so much of her heroines when I read HoL.

i really want to see V, but ohmygod i hate natalie portman. i haven't liked her in anything since the professional, and she was just awful in star wars 1-3, rivaling anakin for bad acting of the year.

after having seen V, i would have to say it was much less about being a good film, and much more about giving hope to the hopeless.

this is of course coming from someone who cried when the crowd emerged in the final scenes.
