So, with Memorial Day coming up I am put in mind of the Doonesbury strip from Memorial Day 2004 (well, the day before...he runs it on Sundays with the full eight panels). This was the year I had started reading the strip (it ran in the Kalamazoo Gazette which was offered free to all students), and given that it was summer I had subscribed to the strip through email. Starting with Memorial Day that year, and running every one since, he has used his comic strip in a very poignant and fitting way for the holiday. It drew much fire, but I thought it was a beautiful honor to what the holiday stands for.

And...just for a bit of the lighter (but still serious) side of the comic...

Doonesbury on the death of Hunter S. Thompson (the character that's the focus of this particular day was based on him):

ROFL! I completely forgot until I started searching for that that the above was Day 2 in a week's worth of Hunter S. Thompson/Duke tributes...

Happy Memorial Day--and seeing that we are involved in a war, I'd like to take it seriously for a moment and pass on Gary Trudeau's "In Memoriam" message:

The "To Be Continued..." is so disturbing. The first two panels weren't in yesterday's newspaper, since he only gets six, but I thought it was a nice touch for the site.

And here's the list from the day before Memorial Day last year:

I love Doonesbury so very, very much. For the rest of you that love Doonesbury so very, very much: [livejournal.com profile] doonesbury.

Anyway...I'm going to head out now. I have a lot to do before I go home. I'll be in Clio until Wednesday afternoon. Whee!
