mmmm...Beckett!
Jan. 17th, 2008 11:27 amThis was the path of my Footlights I...
First, I wanted to direct 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane. They wouldn't let me--"The actors in the department won't be able to handle it" and then "It's too long for an F1 anyway."
Okay...so I looked up a few others. Two more that I proposed was Beckett's Play and Arlene Hutton's I Dream Before I Take the Stand. Obviously, we all know which one won out with the staff. Silly them thought I Dream... was just a nice little piece of realism in a courtroom. Silly them apparently never really analyzed it in any way and realized it was also an interesting little slightly absurd and very surreal piece. It wasn't my best work as a director (it had been a while since I had done anything theatre by that point, so I was pretty rusty, and with all my issues fighting with the staff over my concept for the play I was extremely self-conscious about it), but I had a pretty good cast and they pulled it off beautifully. I got a BA on the project, and I think that was mainly because it wasn't exactly the best prompt book I've ever put together in my life (the prompt book is actually a fair amount of the grade for those projects).
Anyway...somebody posted Beckett's Play on YouTube in two parts. It reminded me of the above, and it includes M-Alan Rickman, W1-Kristin Scott Thomas, W2-Juliet Stevenson.
